The Earth Charter Initiative

Last December I participated in the "First International Congress of Modern Languages" at Universidad de Costa Rica, and I had the pleasure to attend Maria Cristina Damianovic's presentations. She's a Brazilian writer who's involved with a 'literature for peace' project. In Brazil and many other countries including Costa Rica, she has encouraged reading to children who live in marginal areas to help them change their lives. Thanks to Maria Cristina, I became aware of the need to have a sustainable and peaceful world...her words made me realize that we all need to work together if we want justice, equality, peace and love to be all around this planet.

So, she told us about "The Earth Charter Initiative" http://www.earthcharter.org/ The Earth Charter is a declaration of fundamental principles for building a just, sustainable, and peaceful global society for the 21st century. It is a CALL TO ACTION and a motivating force to inspire change in the world. Cool, huh? :) Take a look at the website, there's a lot of interesting info!

The University for Peace http://www.upeace.org/, headquartered here in Costa Rica, is the only university in the United Nations system authorized to offer academic degrees in the field of peace and conflic studies. Check out the website, the graduate programs there seem wonderful!
